Did you know that if you live in the southwest US, you can ride a train? There are so many options for this transportation mode. You can ride one to the airport or around the city, and you can also travel by train to national parks, such as the Grand Canyon. Some routes even take you down the Colorado River and across the Grand Canyon! The list of benefits of riding a train is long, so you’re sure to find something that suits your needs.
63 national parks
Despite the fact that the US is a small nation with a relatively short history, it has managed to come up with some innovative ideas, and one of these ideas is the creation of the national park system. Ulysses S. Grant first designated Yellowstone as a protected area in 1872, and the park remains one of the most iconic landscapes on the planet. The national park system includes 63 parks in the southwest US alone.
Big Bend National Park is a stunning national park in West Texas on the border with Mexico. It was established in 1944 and is named after a gorge in the Rio Grande. Today, most visitors visit Big Bend for its backcountry recreation in the Chisos Mountains. Guadalupe Mountains National Park, east of El Paso, is a mountain preserve. This park also preserves the fossilized reef of a cave and features dry Chihuahuan Desert.
In the southeast, there are numerous national parks. For example, the Mojave Desert is home to the famous Joshua Trees, which are tree-like yucca plants that grow in the desert. Other attractions in the region include Lehman Caves and Wheeler Peak. At least one of these national parks is within driving distance of San Francisco. But you should make sure to plan a trip in advance to avoid missing out on any of these amazing landscapes.
While most of the national parks in the Southwest US charge a fee to enter, there are many other national park units that do not charge an entrance fee. Entrance fees are typically $35 per vehicle for a seven-day pass. Interestingly enough, about a quarter of these parks do charge an entrance fee. In any case, it is recommended to visit at least one national park in each state or territory. If you like exploring the natural wonders of the Southwest, you should plan your trip around those parks.
In the north, you can experience the unique wilderness of the Kobuk Valley National Park and Preserve. This region is home to four active volcanoes, including Mount Redoubt, which is the largest. The park also features glaciers, coastline, and a few lakes. You can also find grizzly bears in Petrified Forest National Park. It is one of the most fascinating and scenic areas in the west.

If you live in Florida, you can take advantage of the Legacy Trail in Venice. This paved trail is an ideal spot for families to ride bicycles and explore Matheson Hammock Park. This trail is open to electric bikes, and is completely flat. There are several loops around the park, including a section that has electric bike options for those with limited energy. And while you’re there, be sure to pack a picnic lunch and take advantage of the shade.

Hawes Trail in the southwest is challenging enough for beginners, but it also offers beautiful scenery. The National Trail and South Mountain are two of the most popular bike trails, with the National Trail being a little more difficult. The average winter temperature in the Phoenix area is in the low 70s.
Trains
Amtrak has three main lines that travel through the southwest US. The California Zephyr connects Chicago with San Francisco, the Southwest Chief goes from Los Angeles to Chicago, and the Sunset Limited runs between Los Angeles and New Orleans. Along the way, passengers will get to experience the scenery of the desert and see wildlife. One of these trains also stops in Tucson, Arizona. Travel time depends on the train’s itinerary. To travel from one city to the other is relatively simple.
The American Southwest has some spectacular natural attractions, such as the Grand Circle, which is an artificially designated geographical circle containing Nevada and the Four Corners states. The area also contains a greater concentration of national parks than any other part of the country. Although trains don’t run through the Grand Canyon, they do pass through the nearby Zion National Park. Whether you take a day trip or stay overnight in a hotel, you’ll experience a fascinating cultural and natural environment in this region.
The scenic train trip along the Santa Fe Trail is the fastest Amtrak has ever taken. This historic route has served Native Americans, Spanish conquistadors, mule caravans, wagon trains, stagecoaches, and gold prospectors for hundreds of years. Amtrak’s renowned Southwest Chief travels 2,265 miles through eight states, and chugs up a 4% grade in the San Juan Mountains while cutting an impressive 15 hours off its travel time.
The El Paso and Southwestern Railroad was an important Class I carrier in the desert region of the US. Founded in 1886 to service the copper mines in southern Arizona, the company grew to be a 1200-mile system connecting Tucson, Arizona, and New Mexico. The EP&SW also had several branch lines to Nacozari, Mexico. In 1955, it merged with the Southern Pacific Railroad, which made it a major link in the transcontinental route of the Golden State Limited.
The Ajo-Clifton train had a comfortable daytime schedule. It left town at 8:35am, Monday through Friday, except Sunday. It traveled 70 miles through the desert, making four flag stops. The return trip took three hours, 10 minutes, and featured copper anodes and other features that set it apart from other trains. When it came time to get back to El Centro, the next day’s schedule was similar to the original one.
