Most people will be familiar with the concept of a bucket list – a commitment of doing “something” before you check out on life. For bikers, that is the perfect opportunity to craft the trip of a lifetime. Here we look at some of the best motorbike road trips in the world.
What are the Most Bucket List-Worthy Routes?
Historic Normandy
We kick off our look at the best motorbike road trips with a French route steeped in history. This 400km ride takes you from Rouen and ends up in Mont Saint-Michael, where you’ll find a particular highlight of the trip in the shape of an old monastery.
The roads are good quality and hug the coast causing many to dub this journey as the ‘beaches of Normandy’. If you’re a bike and history lover, then this will tick many boxes.
America’s West Coast
It’s one of the best-known routes out there but, despite that, it’s probably still an underrated ride by those who only judge it from afar. The famous West Coast route broadly runs from the buzz of San Francisco down to the glitz and the glam of Hollywood giving you two major stops at the start and finish.
Really though, it’s what lays in between that appeals to most. The sweeping Pacific Ocean views, which peak with Big Sur and Monterrey, are the main attraction. As for the route itself, you’re looking at over half a day of riding and, of course, you’ll want to stop. You’ll want a five day trip minimum with all the amazing stop offs considered!
Route 66
We remain in the States for our second road trip recommendation and it’s arguably the most famous route on the planet. Even so, Route 66 is a bucket list classic for good reason. It is a monster of a road though stretching near on 4,000km from Chicago to LA.
Of course, there is loads to see along the famous route, too, including highlights, such as the Blue Whale in Oklahoma and the Meramec Caverns in Missouri. In addition to that, you could detour slightly and hit up the Grand Canyon and immerse yourself into the Vegas gambling scene as well! However, if you’re too tired after the bike ride, you can visit an online casino instead, exploring a myriad of slots, classic table games, and live dealer games, providing you with the needed relaxation after outdoor activities.
The Highest Road in the World
Next up we completely change tact as we switch form two well known routes to a far less household name in the shape of The Khardung La Pass. The road, which is in the Indian region of Ladakh, is widely understood to be the highest road in the world – at least if you’re wanting to take a motorcycle over it anyway – with an elevation approaching 18,000ft. You can pick up souvenir tees on the route too to boast of your journey if that’s your thing!
The road trip itself is a real mixed bag. The scenery, whilst incredible in its own respect, is a far cry from the other routes we’ll discuss in this article but as a pure riding experience you’ll be hard pressed to beat this multi-terrain road that runs so high you could feel the impacts of altitude sickness. It’s a real once in a lifetime job and.
A Taste of Italy
In a far cry from the previous route, this 60km stretch of road in Southern Italy is a real change of pace. The journey in question runs between Sorrento and Amalfi with the Amalfi Coast itself hogging all the headlines as you cruise on a cliff top road overlooking the crystal waters of the Med for the bulk of the ride. In distance, this trip is dwarfed by most bucket list road trips but if you want to experience real Italy there is no better way. Quaint Italian towns, clear waters, bright colours, sweet smells and food and drink to die for mean your time will be bellissimo. Fiordo di Furore is a particular highlight!
The Wonders of Oz
Last but not least we end our road trip heaven in Australia as we wax lyrical about the famous Great Ocean Road, which is located in Victoria. Like the Amalfi Coast, this route isn’t bonkers in size coming in around the 250-300km mark but my goodness there is a plethora of things to see and explore ranging from the splendid coast and surf hotspots through to forest walks and waterfalls – including the eye catching phantom falls.
With Instagrammable photo opportunities galore, you can rest easy here knowing you’re having an amazing time and, equally as important, have faith that you’re on a solid road meaning you can ride to your hearts content – and on absolutely any bike of your choosing. You’ll want to absorb every inch of this beautiful road!
There you have it, a run down of the greatest motorbike road trip destinations. Enjoy! Oh and with these routes, don’t forget your hand exercises for long trips!
